Why did you want to get into the industry?

When I was in school we had a great PE teacher and sport was one of the main reasons I enjoyed my school days. After school I looked for a job that involved working in the leisure / sport industry.

How has Actif helped you?

I started working at Newcastle leisure centre when it opened in in 1991 and although I enjoyed my time in the centre I was interested in Outdoor sports and especially kayaking. While I was working at the centre I was able to gain additional outdoor qualifications and moved from a sports development officer to a Watersports development officer.

What careers advice would you give to people trying to break into the industry?

It is a great industry to be involved in so I would try and get work experience in a few of the Actif sites and work out what line of work you prefer. Once you have worked out which area of the industry you would rather work in get as many relevant qualifications as possible. If you apply for a post and are unsuccessful just keep looking as other jobs will always come up and hopefully, you will be successful with one of your applications.
