£8.8m Tipton pool plans move forward
Plans for the development of a new £8.8m swimming pool in Tipton, West Midlands, have moved forward after the local authority backed the use of the former Little Burton site.
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) agreed to grant an exception to its unitary development plan in order to build the facility on land previously earmarked for residential development. The proposals include a new 25m swimming pool, a teaching pool, a fitness suite and associated changing and community facilities, as well as a refreshment area.
In addition to the Tipton facility, SMBC is planning to develop a new £13.5m complex in West Bromwich, which will boast a six-lane, 25m main pool, a learner pool, a 100-station fitness suite and a four-court sports hall. SMBC cabinet member for transport and regeneration Bob Badham said: "We want these two pools built and open as soon as possible for people to enjoy and we don't want any delays due to lack of foresight."
