£600m stadium plans for Pompey
Portsmouth Football Club has unveiled plans for a new £600m stadium, to be built on the city’s waterfront.
Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron – who were responsible for the Beijing National Stadium and the Allianz Stadium in Munich – have designed the 36,000-seat stadium, which the Premiership team plans to move to by 2011.
As part of a joint venture between the club and Sellar Property Group, the development will also include more than 1,000,000sq ft (92,900sq m) of apartments as well as 1.5 acres of public space with restaurants and cafés.
Fratton Park, where the club has been playing since 1899, will also be turned into 750 homes as part of the deal.
Peter Storrie, Portsmouth’s chief executive, said: “This will be the most spectacular stadium, set against the backdrop of the harbour and the English Channel, befitting the club’s history.
“The club will be playing a big part in the regeneration of the city and our fans will have the very best in terms of facilities and amenities as well as an excellent viewing experience.
“With the backing of our owner Alexandre Gaydamak, these are very exciting times for the club, both on and off the field. The new stadium, along with plans for the club’s new training ground at Titchfield, is proof of where we want Pompey to be – playing at the highest level and in a stadium reflective of a top Premiership side.”
If the plans are granted approval by Portsmouth City Council, work will begin in 2009.
