£5.7m activity centre plans move forward
Plans for a new £5.7m outdoor activity and adventure centre near Farnborough and Aldershot, Hampshire, have received the green light from councillors.
The scheme will now go before Hampshire County Council (HCC) leader Ken Thornber on 14 April after receiving the backing of the council's buildings, land and procurement panel. Runways End Youth Activity Centre will provide day and residential outdoor activities for schools, young people and adults from across the county, as well as further afield.
The centre, which is set to open in summer 2011, will include an 8-acre (3.2-hectare) woodland adjacent to the Basingstoke Canal, a climbing and abseiling tower, high and low ropes courses, a caving system and an indoor multi-activity hall. Plans also include an indoor bouldering facility for climbing, a BMX track, accommodation for up to 50 people and an amenities block for a large camping zone, as well as a campfire amphitheatre.
HCC is working alongside Rushmoor Borough Council and the Blackwater Valley District Scout Council on the proposals, which have received funding through the government's Co-location Fund. A HCC spokesperson said: "The multi-million pound centre will be a modern facility set in an inspiring woodland environment, providing education and recreation opportunities as well as involving a multi-agency approach to tackle a wide range of social issues."
