£4m lottery grant for Vindolanda Fort, Northumberland
The Vindolanda Fort and Roman Army Museums, in the central section of Hadrian's Wall, in Northumberland will be receiving new galleries and an education centre thanks to a £4m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The galleries will be used to display unseen historical artifacts found in the site's two excavated Roman forts.
Patricia Birley, Vindolanda Trust director, said: "The HLF grant is an immense boost for the work of The Vindolanda Charitable Trust and it will also enhance the central sector of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site.
"This project will vastly improve the resources and opportunities that our Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum sites are able to offer our visitors and will facilitate a return to Vindolanda of some of our famous writing tablets by way of a loan from the British Museum."
The HLF application was supported by the not-for-profit organisation Hadrian's Wall Heritage, which is responsible for the development of the Hadrian's World Heritage Site. Although financing has been earmarked for the project, the trust will now need to submit a fully-developed application to secure the grant.
