£20m revamped swimming centre reopens in Portsmouth
The Mountbatten Centre's new fitness facilities will be reopened this week in Portsmouth by Olympic swimmer Katy Sexton, following the completion of a £20m revamp.
The Mountbatten Centre offers a 50m, eight-lane swimming pool with moveable floor and submersible boom, which when used will create two 25m pools. The centre also comprises a 12.5m teaching pool, 200-seat viewing area, a 150-station health and fitness facility with a steamroom, spa and treatment rooms and new changing rooms. The redevelopment, funded by Portsmouth City Council and a £5.49m grant from Sports England, was carried out by Broadwater Leisure, which will also manage the centre and its adjacent Gymnastics Centre (opened in February) on a 25-year contract.
The existing sports hall will benefit from a new semi-sprung floor and improved lighting, while the athletics and cycle tracks will be resurfaced. A new dance studio, function room and club rooms have also be built. A new entrance and reception area and refurbished catering area will complete the redevelopment and reflect the new leisure brand. Construction work was carried out by Kier Southern.
The opening of the centre will result in the closure of the Victoria Leisure Centre so the land can be sold to help fund the new centre's revamp. Terry Hall, PCC member for culture and leisure, said: "When Victoria opened all those many years ago, the people of Portsmouth had a swimming pool to be proud of. When the Mountbatten Centre opens, the people of Portsmouth will have a world-class swimming facility to be proud of."
