£20.6m refurbishment planned for NIA
Birmingham City Council (BCC) leader Mike Whitby has announced plans for undertake a £20.6m refurbishment of the facilities at the National Indoor Arena (NIA).
Whitby revealed the proposals in his annual State of the City speech to the full council on 11 October, with the project to be the first major work at the NIA since its 1991 opening.
It is anticipated the revamp scheme will help ensure the long-term success of the NIA, which currently contributes around £150m to the regional economy each year.
Whitby said: "The initial investment in the NIA was a clear statement by Birmingham about re-balancing our economy, and providing a new offer around visitors and events.
"The works will also enhance the area around the arena further boosting regeneration, growth and the attraction of a key part of the city."
NEC Group Arenas managing director Phil Mead added: "The aim of the redevelopment programme is to make the NIA more accessible, both visually and physically, taking advantage of its key canal-side location."
