£1m+ for Scottish museums and galleries
More than 260 accredited museums and galleries across Scotland are in line to benefit from support totalling in excess of £1m from the Scottish Government's 2012-13 draft budget.
The funding, which is to be administered by Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) on behalf of the government, comprises both revenue (£970,000) and capital (£100,000) support.
A total of £400,000 of revenue funding will be made available to accredited venues, with the remainder to be ring-fenced for Recognised Collections.
Scottish cabinet secretary for culture Fiona Hyslop said: "Our museums and galleries welcome millions of visitors every year and are tremendously important to Scottish tourism and the economy.
"Despite deep cuts in public finances imposed by the UK government, I have prioritised my budget to minimise as far as possible the impact on our cultural and heritage sector."
MGS chief executive officer Joanne Orr added: "To receive this commitment in the current challenging economic climate is a real endorsement of the importance of the Scottish museums and galleries sector."
