£15m upgrade planned for Cumbria’s Sands Centre
A £15m upgrade is being planned for The Sands Centre in Carlisle, Cumbria.
The project is the brainchild of a partnership between Carlisle City Council, the University of Cumbria and Carlisle Leisure Limited.
The plans include a 25m swimming pool with a teaching pool and spectator seating, a new sports hall and gym, refurbished changing areas, enhanced conference facilities and an expanded the main hall.
There will also be new offices, teaching space and sports performance labs, as well as a conditioning room and a sports injuries and rehabilitation clinic for the university’s School of Sport, which is proposing to use The Sands Centre as its main base.
Peter McCaffery, vice chancellor of the university, said: “Sports facilities are vital if we are to attract students to the city and I am certain that the new facilities under discussion will prove the catalyst for growth in the student community of Carlisle.”
If the scheme is approved by the council’s planning committee, work could begin in 2010 and be completed by 2012.
