£13m leisure centre planned for Oldbury
A new £13m social care, health and leisure facility could open in Oldbury, Sandwell as early as 2010.
The project, which is a partnership between Sandwell Council, Sandwell Leisure Trust and Sandwell Primary Care Trust, has received government funding and will provide a new facility on the site of the existing Oldbury Leisure Centre.
Development of the site will be procured through Sandwell LIFT Company, a national NHS initiative aimed at delivering investment into health and social services through a partnership between Sandwell Primary Care Trust and a private partner.
Plans are yet to be finalised, but work on the project could begin by the end of 2009.
The new facilities will focus on providing social care, health and leisure services for people with disabilities.
The leisure facilities will be available to adults with disabilities as well as the general public. Indoor and outdoor activities including sports and hydrotherapy will be offered.
A local GP surgery, Tividale Family Practice, will also be relocated to the site.
Councillor Darren Cooper, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for adult services, said the project will help provide mainstream services for older people and people with a range of abilities, as well as delivering on the council’s promise to replace Causeway Green day centre.
Sandwell Primary Care Trust chairman Richard Nugent said: “We are very excited by this project, the first scheme directly procured by the council through the NHS LIFT framework. It will deliver superb services to the local community.”
