Zoo goes green with wind power
Wildwood wildlife park near Canterbury, Kent, UK, has invested in green energy by installing a 18m-high wind turbine at the attraction.
The 20kW turbine will generate around 35,000 unites of energy a year, offsetting more than 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The £111,478 turbine was funded by grants from the government's Low Carbon Buildings Programme (£28,765), EDF Energy (£30,000) and Canterbury City Council (£52,713).
As part of the zoo's green strategy, the zoo's hot water is produced by energy created using solar panels and the heating of the attraction is provided by wood-burning stoves.
The attraction is owned and operated by the Wildwood Trust.
Peter Smith, the trust's chief executive, said: "As a nature conservation charity it makes little sense for us not to consider renewable alternatives to our energy needs.
"Many habitats and animal and plant species in the UK will be threatened if climate change proceeds unchecked. A policy of implementing and promoting renewable energy generation matches perfectly the goals of our organisation."
