Zamperla seeking a name for its new Venetian scheme
Italian roller coaster company Zamperla is running a competition to find a name, logo and tagline for its proposed new development in Venice, Italy.
Seeking what it calls 'creative minds', Zamperla says the scheme will embody its company vision - 'an historical area dedicated to culture, tradition, fun and entertainment'.
Currently known by the working title of 'Isola di San Biagio', the €80m (£66m), 4ha (431,000sq ft) park will be built on a former landfill site island in the Venetian Lagoon and feature a 55m (180ft) ferris wheel, roller coaster and other rides, plus an exhibition outlining the history and ecology of Venice.
Speaking to AFP, company founder Alberto Zamperla said: "We're talking about the history of Venice - one of my passions - but done my way." He added that the plans envisage a cultural attraction, not just an amusement park.
Lying at the western end of the city's Giudecca canal, the artificial island is currently filled with waste from an incinerator which closed in 1985. Zamperla says construction of the project will firstly involve decontaminating the site, which itself could create as many as 500 jobs.
The scheme is not without its detractors though, with both residents and city officials concerned that the resulting increase in tourists - an expected 11,000 per day within two years - would overwhelm the recently listed World Monuments Fund 'at risk' heritage site.
According to reports, the attraction could be open by late 2015 depending on the level of opposition it generates.
The competition, with a prize of €20,000 (£16,500), closes at the end of March.
