Yorkshire Sculpture Park opens Visitor Centre
The new visitor centre at Yorkshire Sculpture Park is to open to the public on 15 June, in celebration of the park's 25th anniversary. The 1744sq m visitor centre is part of a £9.5m regeneration of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, set within the grounds of the 18th century estate of Bretton Hall. The centre, which houses a restaurant, shop, coffee bar and meeting rooms has been designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects, and nestles inconspicuously amongst the trees. With a lecture theatre and audio-visual facilities the centre hopes to attract companies and organisations looking for conference or corporate events venues. Finance for the project came mainly from the European Regional Development fund, but as the park is a charity, also from fundraising. Another addition to the park is a 100m long, steel plate Walk of Art, an outdoor walkway through the park that leads into the concourse of the visitor centre. The Walk of Art, which has not yet been laid, will be engraved with names and already over 1000 locals and parishioners have put theirs down for inclusion. 'The Walk of Art is designed to echo the park's formal terrace,' said Janice Cox, spokesperson for the park. 'It will be a sea of names that mark a moment in time - but which will be altered by the weather and footfall, continually changing its visual impact.' Further phases of the regeneration include the acquisition of 237 acres of the former estate, known as Longside; development of a gallery and workspace; a new entrance, access road and car park and the general restoration of the landscape and buildings. An underground gallery and indoor education facilities are also planned. Details: +44 (0)1924 830677 or visit www.ysp.co.uk
