Wyre Forest District Council eyes new leisure complex in Kidderminster
Wyre Forest District Council has submitted an application for outline planning permission for a new leisure centre in the Kidderminster area.
The council hopes to build a new leisure facility at Silverwoods, the former British Sugar Site, along the Kidderminster to Stourport Road.
The application comes after a proposed £10m project at the former Victoria Carpets sports ground failed to progress beyond planning as a land deal never materialised.
The facility will, as a minimum, include a sports hall, six-lane swimming pool, learner pool, climbing wall, fitness facilities and outdoor small football pitches.
Other facilities at the site will include fitness and dance studios, as well as a cafe with viewing areas.
The council is yet to agree on design details for the centre, as progress has only reached an outline planning stage.
“Applying for planning permission at the Silverwoods site is the next step in this major project which is about providing first class leisure and sports facilities in a modern energy efficient building,” Councillor Ian Hardiman, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for community wellbeing, told Leisure Opportunities.
“The project is also about saving the Council and tax payers money.”
It is thought the council already has a number of leisure contractors interested in tendering for the project, with the future of the council’s outline plans due to be determined at a planning meeting in April.
