World Architecture Day 2016 will highlight demand to design a better world
This year’s World UNities.co.uk/sectors/news/architecture'>architecture Day will be used by the industry to promote the role of good design in “ensuring a better future for all people.”
The International Union of Architects (UIA), which represents the world’s 1.3 million architects, has announced that the 3 October milestone will have the theme ‘Design a Better World.’
The association has called on architecture organisations around the globe to use the day to highlight “the essential role of design in alleviating human suffering, reducing planetary burdens and enhancing the quality of life.”
In a statement, the UIA said: “Our members and partners will mobilise to promote the enormous power of architecture to cope with climate change, and to foster communities that are strong, safe, equitable, productive and affordable.”
Ways in which architects, designers and investors can build a better world – including through the creation of high-quality public realm and leisure spaces – will be outlined by the UIA at the United Nations’ Habitat III conference of sustainable urban development in Quito, Ecuador on 17-20 October.
The topic will also be discussed from 7-18 November in Marrakech, Morocco, as the main parties seeking to enforce the Paris Agreement on climate change meet to begin their preparations through the UN’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).
