Working group backs St Kilda proposals
A working group behind plans for a new visitor centre for the St Kilda archipelago has backed a feasibility study, which identified Mangurstadh in Uig, Isle of Skye as the preferred location.
The St Kilda Working Group considered the views of representatives behind other shortlisted sites for the new centre - Cleitreval in North Uist or Leverburgh, Harris, but reaffirmed its support for the Uig proposals. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CNES), the local authority which oversees the islands, and the National Trust for Scotland, which manages St Kilda, form part of the working group along with representatives from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, gaelic arts agency Proiseact nan Ealan, and VisitScotland.
CNES' Angus McCormack, chair of the working group, said: "It is vitally important to stress that this project is very much in its infancy and will require the bringing together of a wide local, national and international group to deliver the vision. "I believe that the hard work communities have put into their proposals can contribute to the wider vision for the St Kilda Centre in the Outer Hebrides, and be of direct benefit to these communities."
