Work starts on new Irish World Heritage Centre
Construction work has now started on a two-phase development to build a new Irish World Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, 25 years after the original venue opened.
The venue, which aims to celebrate the history and contribution of Irish communities across the world, will be located at the heart of a 25-acre (10.1-hectare) site on Queen's Road.
An attraction exploring the history of Irish communities worldwide will be created, while the first phase will also include a multi-use hall; a bar and restaurant; and a business centre.
Foundations for the second phase will also be provided, which is expected to incorporate an area celebrating Irish heritage; a hotel; a conference centre; and leisure facilities.
Manchester City Council deputy leader Sue Murphy said: "The new Irish World Heritage Centre will be another internationally-significant Manchester visitor attraction."
The centre is due to open next summer.
