Work starts on West Bromwich pool site
Work has started on the demolition of a derelict pub off Moor Street and Bromford Lane in West Bromwich, which is to make way for a new swimming pool.
Sandwell Council is leading the pool project, which is scheduled for completion in 2014 and will also include the creation of a 100-station gym and a refreshment area. Legal, financial and planning matters have also started on the project, with the local authority due to appoint a development partner in due course.
The development is part of a wider bid to regenerate West Bromwich town centre and is one of two pools planned, with Sandwell Council also eyeing an £8.8m facility in Tipton. Council cabinet member for jobs and economy Ian Jones said: "We have acquired the site and are getting it ready ahead of issuing a tender for a contractor.
"We are pressing ahead with this scheme as fast as possible because a swimming pool is what local people have told us they want."
