Bedford-based contractor SDC Builders has commenced work on the construction of a new sports centre at the University of Cambridge, which is due to be completed in October 2013.
The 6,060sq m (65,229sq ft) Cambridge Sports Centre development - designed by Arup Associates - is to incorporate a large sports hall housing two full-size courts for basketball and badminton among others.
A spacious fitness suite equipped with cardiovascular equipment; an audio-visual space; and an extensive strength and conditioning wing with free weights areas are also planned as part of the project.
Meanwhile, the centre will allow for the addition of sports medicine and rehabilitation space and another wing of six fives courts and squash courts - subject to funding.
University of Cambridge director of physical education Tony Lemons said the first phase of the development was a "step-change" in the institution's provision of sporting facilities.
"The project will initiate a step-change in the quality and scope of sport facilities available to the university population and the local community," said Lemons.
Two further phases are also planned for the centre, which will incorporate tennis courts and a 50m swimming pool. Plans for the first phase were approved earlier this year.
