Widnes Waterfront regeneration
A major new initiative in Widnes could see the transformation of a low quality industrial site on the town's waterfront into a major regional development.
The Halton Partnership has been allocated £8m from the European Regional Development Fund for the project and it is anticipated that public and private investment will provide a further £70m. Joint consultants Jones Lang LaSalle and Building Design Partnership have recently completed a masterplan and delivery strategy for the work.
In addition to retail, office and industrial space, the development allows for the construction of a Waterside Park along the banks of the River Mersey and Sankey Canal. This will feature hard surfaced public spaces as well as soft parkland areas with trees, seating areas and public art.Recreational routes and leisure activity will be encouraged along the waterside and plans are being developed which Halton Borough Council hopes will see the Sankey Canal restored and reopened to boats. The TransPennine Trail long distance cycle route already runs through the area.
It is also anticipated that leisure facilities and visitor attractions will be built along the waterfront, which may include opportunities for a museum, visitor centre or commercial leisure activities.A mixed-use development planned to the west of the Waterside Park could provide opportunities for further leisure facilities, restaurants and bars.
Elsewhere in the scheme, a potential marina site off the Sankey Canal has also been identified. Details: www.halton.gov.uk
