Westway Sports Centre reopens
A sports centre has re-opened after £10m worth of redevelopment in North Kensington, underneath the Westway flyover.
The centre, run by North Kensington Amenity Trust, is an eight acre site which houses the UK's largest climbing centre, roofed by the flyover itself.
The Westway Sports Centre will play host to youth sports development programmes in tennis, football and climbing, involving up to 1000 children a week.
Other facilities include four professional-standard clay tennis courts and eight indoor tennis courts, six all-weather football pitches, new basketball courts and a floodlit riding arena with 20 horses stabled on site. The centre is also home to four Handball Fives courts. The British handball game was previously only played in private schools and top universities, but it is now hoped the game will become popular with local schools.
Support for the centre came from an £8.3m donation by Sport England. Donations were also received from the Lawn Tennis and Football Associations and the Eton Fives Association.
The centre is offering free sessions for local residents to try out sports over the next six weeks.
