West Midlands Safari Park (WMSP) is planning to build a 100-metre (330ft) revolving observation tower for the Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare, in Somerset, UK.

The new attraction will be located adjacent to the existing SeaQuarium attraction and is part of the company's plans to improve its attractions portfolio, which includes the West Midlands Safari Park near Kidderminster and two SeaQuarium in Rhyl and Weston.

Christopher Donkin, attractions manager, said the tower will also include a thrill ride which will travel from the base of the tower to the top. "People will be able to take in the ocean views before freefalling to the ground where magnetic breaks will ensure a safe landing."

The attraction could also join a £30m leisure complex, called Lifestation@Tropicana, which is awaiting planning permission from North Somerset Council.

The Tropicana complex, if given the go-ahead, will include a six-lane, 25m pool, a water park, a 96-bed hotel, an eight-screen cinema, a 20-lane bowling alley and restaurants and bars.

The plans for Tropicana, submitted by developer Henry Boot, were due to be approved by the council 23 July. However, due to recently amended plans, a decision has been delayed at least for the next two weeks.

"If everything goes to plan, Weston could have two new attractions by 2010," said Donkin.
