Welsh National Parks benefit economy
A new study called Valuing the National Parks of Wales has revealed that the country’s three National Parks are a major economic asset.
The research found that 4,000 jobs in Wales are supported by the Snowdonia National Park alone, which directly and indirectly contributes £66m annually to the Welsh economy.
For example, the Snowdonia National Park Authority set up the Upland Footpath Partnership and Rhaglen Tir Eryri following a £6m European grant. These schemes resulted in new jobs and an enhanced local skills base, restored landscape features, protected and improved wildlife habitats and upgraded public access for the benefit of visitors and local people.
Aneurin Phillips, chief executive of the authority, said: “I welcome the findings of this new research, as it confirms that the park is an economic asset. These schemes are just two examples of how the special landscape and wildlife of the park can benefit the local economy.”
The study was initiated by the Valuing our Environment Partnership under the commission of the Countryside Council for Wales, the National Trust Wales and the three National Park Authorities.
Its overall aim is to inform the National Assembly for Wales and local authorities about the fundamental importance of The Brecon Beacons National Park, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Snowdonia National Park. Details: www.nationaltrust.org.uk
