Wakefield Sports Club eyes new facilities
Wakefield Sports Club (WSC) has appointed Sports Solutions GB (SSGB) to help explore plans for the creation of a new community sports and social club.
The amateur multi-sports club was founded in 1847 and currently occupies the 7.4-acre (3-hectare) College Grove site. However, it is now eyeing up an expansion of its facilities. SSGB will help draw up a feasibility study into plans to develop a new club elsewhere in Wakefield, while also turning the College Grove site over to housing.
It is anticipated the sale of College Grove would fund the project, which would lead to new facilities created to meet Sport England specifications and expand its offer to more users. Proposals include the development of an accessible facility with additional sports provision, as well as culture-based alternatives such as a music and dance studio.
WSC chair Bill Mayou said: "We are delighted to be in a position to investigate the opportunity to relocate the club to a larger site, which is far more suitable to the needs of our users and will offer the opportunity for more of the local community to become involved in a range of sports."
