Fire erupts at under development Volcano Bay
A fire broke out on the construction site of Universal’s under-development Volcano Bay waterpark in Orlando yesterday (14 June).
The ‘next-generation’ Volcano Bay – which is set to replace the 40-year-old Wet N’ Wild Orlando when it opens in 2017 – was engulfed in flames in an area being used to store waterslide parts for the future development. Photos on social media showed a tower of thick black smoke coming from the site.
A Universal spokesperson said that the incident would have no impact on park operations and that the fire was extinguished “relatively quickly”. A cause for the blaze has not yet been determined.
Universal says Volcano Bay will “re-imagine what it means to be a waterpark.” According to the operator, the attraction will be highly themed, with a completely immersive environment inspired by tropical islands.
Volcano Bay will complement Universal’s existing Cabana Bay Beach Resort and is due to include a ‘volcano’ with slides, a wave pool, lazy river and rapids ride.
