V&A and Science Museum set dates for scrapping entry fees
On the first day of his new job as director of the V&A, Mark Jones has set a date for scrapping the £5 entry fee. Coinciding with the launch of Museums and Galleries Month today, Jones has announced the end of entry fees from 22 November, following the Chancellor Gordon Brown's budget speech last month, changing the law to allow museums and galleries to allow free entry. The Science Museum has followed suit announcing the end of entry fees from 1 December. Culture Secretary, Chris Smith, welcomed the announcements as 'very good news'. Other institutions, including the Natural History Museum, the Museum of London, and the Imperial War Museum, are still deciding if they too will abolish fees. Meanwhile, the V&A will be free on every Wednesday in May, Museums and Galleries month 2001.
