US$305m plans for Gateway Arch in St Louis
US$305m (£186.3m, 205.8m euro) plans to revamp the grounds surrounding the famous Gateway Arch in St Louise, Missouri, US have been unveiled.
The 630ft-tall arch – located within the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial – was designed by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and the structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947, and opened to the public in 1967.
At the heart of the scheme, announced by the National Park Service, are plans to provide better links between downtown St Louis, the Arch grounds, the Mississippi riverfront and East St Louis.
There are also suggestions that the underground Museum of Westward Expansion be extended.
The National Park Service will now hold a competition for architects to submit plans for the 91-acre memorial, which commemorates the Louisiana Purchase.
