US Parrish Art Museum is set to open next week
The Parrish Art Museum in Long Island, New York, US is set to unveil its new building on 10 November 2012.
Spanning a 14-acre (5.7 hectare) site in the town of Water Mill, the new 34,400sq ft (3,195sq m), Herzog & de Meuron-designed museum will be twice the size of the existing facility in Southampton and about three miles away from it.
It will be the first art museum built on the East End of Long Island in more than a century.
The building was designed to recreate various architectural features found in the region including vernacular architecture and a combination of daylighting and bare fluorescent high colour-rendering lamps.
Reed Hilderbrand architects designed the landscape, which consists entirely of native plants. The design evokes features of the East End - meadow, wetland, scrub woodland, and views of expansive sky and horizon.
The museum will include 12,200sq ft (1,233sq m) of exhibition space including dedicated galleries that will showcase masterworks of art from the permanent collection.
Seven skylit galleries, comprising 7,600sq ft (706sq m) will be devoted to the Parrish's famous collections of American art.
Ranging from the nineteenth century to the present, the Parrish's holdings include more than 2,600 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, a selection of which will be on view year round.
The museum's inaugural exhibition will a career spanning exhibition of more than 40 works by British-born artist Malcolm Morley, who has maintained a studio on eastern Long Island since 1983.
Other facilities include a 2,400sq ft (223sq m) multipurpose room that will be used for lectures, live performances, seminars, dinners and receptions.
