Trust: Number of 'at risk' theatres grows
The Theatres Trust has revealed that the number of UK properties included on this year's Theatre Buildings At Risk (TBAR) register has increased by nearly 5.5 per cent to 58.
Brighton Hippodrome (Grade II*); Morecambe Winter Gardens (Grade II*); and Hulme Hippodrome (Grade II) are among the 41 English inclusions on the 2011 register. A further seven Scottish and 10 Welsh venues - including the Category A-listed Aberdeen Tivoli (Scotland) and Theatr Harlech (Wales) have also been included on the list.
Despite the increase, however, there have been a number of theatres that have been removed from the TBAR, with ownership transferred to new community-based trusts. Theatres no longer deemed to be at list include London's Grade II*-listed Hackney Empire and the Grade II-listed Neptune Theatre in Liverpool.
Mhora Samuel, director of The Theatres Trust, said: "In a year when many local authorities, public bodies and private owners reviewed the funding and ownership of their theatres, local campaigns were mounted to save theatres under threat. "We hope that legislation, such as the government's new Localism Bill, will create the conditions and empower more individuals and groups to take on the guardianship of theatres at risk."
