Troy Museum to open this year
The Unesco World Heritage Site of Troy in northwestern Turkey is set for a new museum celebrating its much-mythologised history, which will open later this year.
5,000 years of history, including the ancient civilisations of Troy, will be on display at the Troy Museum, with historical artefacts such as sculptures, sarcophaguses and inscriptions all in the collection.
The museum will be fully indoor and stretch to roughly 11,000sq m (118,403sq ft) in area and is part of the Year of Troy directive backed by the Turkish government, marking the 20th anniversary of Troy becoming a Unesco World Heritage Site.
It will be split into seven sections and artefacts will be accompanied by written and visual panels, diorama and animations.
With donations from Çanakkale Museum, Izmir Archeology Museum, Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Istanbul Archeological Museums and Penn Museum in the US, the collection promises to be extensive and tell the rich history of Troy.
Around 1 million visitors are expected through the doors in the museum’s first year, among them the Hollywood actors who starred in the 2004 movie Troy – including Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom – who have been invited to visit by Turkey's Tourism and Culture Ministry.
