Tigers get go-ahead for £100m plans
Leicester Tigers Rugby Football Club (LTRFC) has been granted conditional planning approval for the £100m redevelopment of the former Granby Halls and Fosse Day Centre sites.
The project, which was given the green light by Leicester City Council, will be situated on land adjacent to the club's Welford Road stadium, and includes the construction of a new four-star hotel. New facilities for the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) and the University of Leicester on the Granby Halls site, and a multi-storey car park and an office complex on the Fosse site, are also among the plans.
David Clayton, LTRFC managing director, said: "We think the plans are innovative and exciting. We have worked closely with our neighbours to help meet the requirements of the University Hospitals of Leicester, the Leicester University and Leicester College, as well as providing a hotel to serve the city centre. The benefits will permeate through the whole community and will also allow Leicester Tigers to continue to develop. We believe the scheme will enhance this area of the city and give Leicester another eye-catching development."
In addition to the plans, the first phase of work on the redevelopment of the Welford Road stadium is set to be completed by the start of the 2009-10 season, with the new Caterpillar Stand set to increase the venue's capacity to 24,000.
