The new look Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley
The transformation of the Lagoon Leisure Centre, as part of the new Paisley Community Sports Hub, is almost complete and the revamped swimming pool will open on 2 July.
The Lagoon Leisure Pool originally opened in 1987 followed with extensions to include an Ice Arena in 1992 and the building of a six-court regional sports hall in 2008..
With the closure of the ice rink in 2007 due to structural damage, plans were put in place to look at a change of use for the area as part of a broader investment strategy. The Lagoon has now benefited from a £8m facelift as part of a larger £40m investment programme by Renfrewshire Council in its sports centres and swimming pools.
The refurbishment includes the conversion of the former ice arena to offer a spacious cutting edge fitness suite, twice the size of the original. With the very latest in gym equipment, accessibility has been improved and is now open.
Brand new dance studios, a dedicated spin studio and conference space and a new multi-functional venue which will cater for an array of events and a range of youth and community programmes, including roller sessions, professional dance classes, sports and leisure sessions such as roller hockey and a brand new fitness class programme for teenagers.
This refurbished area of the centre features a new shared service arrangement with the Council's social work department in the form of day care facility for adults with learning disabilities, with everything from group work rooms and arts and crafts, media and computer rooms, to personal care areas and a sensory/multimedia room.
The swimming pool will retain the its wave machine and splash pool, while the existing flume is being replaced with a new and improved one and new water features will be introduced.
The improvements will see the creation of a new luxury health spa featuring holistic health and well-being treatments. The exciting spa plans include steam and aroma rooms, Rasul mud treatment room, heated foot spas and relaxing loungers, monsoon showers and an ice fountain. The spa is due for completion by the autumn of 2012.
