The Net Mender at Scottish Fisheries Museum
The Scottish Fisheries Museum will be showing a temporary exhibition of work by the artist Douglas Robertson this summer.
This exhibition features a number of 3D images reflecting Douglas’ memories of the maritime environment in which he grew up and by which he is continually inspired.
Some of the work relates to folk tales, traditions or literature from the Orkney, Shetland and the Hebridean Isles but also features references to the River Tay and the West Coast.
His piece ‘The Blue Men’ for example refers to the sea spirits that are said to live in the Minch between Harris and Lewis and the Shiant Islands. They are said to swim alongside boats and can be mischievous and troublesome, rocking the boats and their crews.
‘Idle Cranes’ by contrast is a tribute to the stark reality of the dying shipbuilding tradition of the Clyde, and the loss of thousands of skilled workers.
Born in Dundee and currently working and living in Hampshire, Douglas has exhibited widely throughout the country and his work has featured in various publications and worldwide broadcasts.
The sights and sounds of the Dundee of Robertson’s childhood, from the working mills and the new ships being built or old ships landing their cargo to the street names relating to Arctic exploration and the Tay Whale Skeleton and archaeological finds in the museum, continue to inspire the artist.
Douglas says: “It seemed to me that every tree, stone, or hill had it’s mythology or place in folklore. The entire area was a wealth of images, ideas, and stories waiting to be told. This curiosity developed as a child still remains with me as an adult and an artist.”
Linda Fitzpatrick from Scottish Fisheries Museum said: “Douglas last exhibited at the museum in 1996 and it is a genuine honour to have him back in Scotland exhibiting his work here for the rest of the season.”
‘The Net Mender’ runs until 23 of September.
