Thames Water rethinks Barn Elms plans
Thames Water has said London's Barn Elms Playing Fields is no longer its preferred site for an excavation and waste transfer compound in the development of a new 'super sewer'.
It follows a concerted effort by residents, councils and other figures, which joined forces in July to protect the riverside nature spot and sports hub between Putney and Barnes.
The water company has now selected an alternative brownfield site as its preferred location for the compound, which will be used during a seven-year construction process.
Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia said: "The decision comes as a huge relief but we are not celebrating yet.
"There is still a long way to go before these playing fields are completely safe and we will now focus our efforts on ensuring Thames Water sticks to the alternative site."
