Tate Britain tops total UK attendance figures
Exhibitions at the Tate Britain and the Royal Academy have topped a list of the UK’s most-attended attractions last year.
Compiled by The Art Newspaper, the survey of the Top 10 exhibitions in the UK showed that a total of 382,269 people attended the Turner Whistler Monet exhibition at London’s Tate Britain – more than 4,000 visitors a day – putting it top of the list.
The Royal Academy Turks exhibition took second place while the Frida Kahlo exhibition at Tate Modern, marketed as the first solo show for the Mexican painter, came third with attendance figures of more than 3,000 people a day.
London’s National Gallery had three entries, with its Caravaggio, Raphael and Degas shows. The only non-London venue in the top 10 was Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art which came tenth with The Philosopher’s Garden.
However, because the Tate allowed a maximum of 500 visitors at any time into its Turner Whistler Monet exhibition, it only came 19th in the Top 10 most visited exhibitions in the world.
The Tokyo National Museum topped the world’s best attended exhibitions list with its Hokusai exhibition – based around the popular Japanese artist and sculptor Katsushika Hokusai and his woodblock prints.
The Hokusai exhibition had 9,436 visitors a day, making it the most visited exhibition in the world since The Art Newspaper began its annual figures in 1996. Details: www.theartnewspaper.com
