Swiss railway marks 100th anniversary
A special programme of events to be held throughout 2010 has been organised in order to celebrate the 100th anniversary of a historic railway linking St Moritz, Switzerland, and Tirano, Italy.
Forming part of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB), the 61km (37.9-mile) Bernina Line first carried passengers across the Alps via the Bernina Pass since 1910, with a highest point of 2,253m (7,392ft) above sea level. The historic line, which carries more than 700,000 passengers each year, was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee in 2008 and will now benefit from a year-long series of events.
A UNESCO World Heritage exhibition in St Moritz and an exhibition at the RhB Snow Dome at the Diavolezza valley station both opened in January. In May, a series of new Allegra railcars will be rolled out by RhB in Tirano, Italy. Meanwhile, a RhB jubilee centred on the circular viaduct and the surrounding area in Brusio, Switzerland, will also help to mark the anniversary, while the "grand finale" is scheudled for Pontresina, Switzerland, in September.
