Sutherland fishermen in tourism drive
Two fishermen based in Scourie, north west Scotland, have unveiled plans to expand their Handa Shellfish business in a bid to encourage more tourists to the area.
During the summer months, Roger Tebay and Paul Murray provide a ferry service between Tarbet and the island of Handa, and now plan to acquire two new boats to increase tourism opportunities. Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has contributed £23,500 in a bid to help the business acquire the vessels, which will run from the harbour in Scourie and can accommodate up to 12 people each.
HIE development manager Morag Goodfellow said: "Both Roger and Paul are passionate about raising awareness of the natural environment in North West Sutherland. They themselves choose to fish sustainably and conserve fish stocks over the summer months by focusing on the tourism side of the business. "By stimulating their business to grow they can expand their workforce and create permanent local jobs. The project has the ability to strengthen the whole life of the community."
Murray added: "Our boat trips would travel round Badcall Islands and along the coastline at Edrachilles Bay where dolphins, basking sharks and minke whales have all been seen. We will also be able to provide private charters for fishing and diving excursions."
