Subterranean hotel spa brought to life underneath central Paris
The newly opened boutique hotel Pavillon Faubourg Saint-Germain in Paris is home to a new underground urban wellness escape, named Spa des Prés.
Located in Paris' seventh arrondissement, the spa has been brought to life in a vaulted cellar that once housed a legendary cabaret where poet and composer Léo Ferré began his career.
Designed for hotel guests, day visitors and locals alike, the spa facility is located beneath the new 47-key hotel spread across three historic Parisian building.
Spa des Prés features two treatment rooms, a deep indoor pool with massage jets, a hammam, a meditation and yoga room and a fitness studio equipped with Technogym.
Working with a limited area of 140sq m, the design brief was to provide a range of high-quality wellness facilities while maintaining a sense of spaciousness.
The spa was completed after an 18-month refurbishment project and was conceptualised by interior designer Didier Benderli, who worked closely with architect Vincent Bastie to deliver the vision. The team wanted to create a tranquil space for relaxation that felt a world away from the bustling streets of Paris, despite its central location.
An important element of the process involved paying tribute to the building’s history by maintaining original features, such as the building’s stone steps – now listed as a historical monument – which guests descend to reach the spa.
In partnership with Parisian spa and skincare brand, Codage Paris, the spa offers a menu of personalised treatments designed to relax, stimulate and detoxify the body. The spa team revealed to Spa Business that it's currently in talks with the brand about developing a bespoke range of exclusive treatments for the spa.
The hotel is owned by family-run business Chevalier Paris Establishments (CPE) and is one of four luxury boutique hotels located in Paris. Having opened earlier this year, Pavillon Faubourg Saint-Germain joins the Le Pavillon de la Reine, Pavillon des Lettres and Le Petit Moulin.
Pavillon de la Reine was the first of the CPE properties to open with a spa – called Spa de la Reine which is also partnered with Codage Paris – which set the tone for the company’s future wellness ventures.
The group’s wellness philosophy is focused on creating quintessentially Parisian wellness escapes located in the heart of the capital city.
