'Substantial' grant for Great Yarmouth theatre
English Heritage has announced a "substantial" grant worth £250,000 towards efforts to restore the historic St George's Theatre building in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
The former Chapel of St George property is currently undergoing a major programme of work to repair and convert it into a new arts venue as part of a £9.3m regeneration project.
London-based Hopkins Architects have drawn up proposals for the Grade I-listed venue after being appointed by Great Yarmouth Borough Council last year.
Repairs to the building will include structural work to the cupola; the replacement of a lead roof; upgraded brickwork and stonework; and the rejuvenation of 18th century joinery.
English Heritage planning director for the east Greg Luton said: "We are pleased to be able to grant-aid these essential repairs which will allow this striking building to find a new use and ultimately secure its future."
