Stormzy and Wilfried Zaha take control of AFC Croydon Athletic
Multi-award-winning musician, Stormzy, has joined forces with Crystal Palace FC forward Wilfried Zaha to take over non-league football club, AFC Croydon Athletic.
Both Zaha and Stormzy – real name Michael Owuo Junior – grew up in the south London borough and have connections to the club. Zaha also scored his first-ever professional goal at Croydon's Mayfield Stadium in Thornton Heath, playing for Crystal Palace reserves.
The pair took over the club after all 35 members of the club’s committee voted in favour of the takeover.
They will be joined in the venture by a third partner, former Crystal Palace head of player care, Danny Young.
In a statement, the club said: "A three-person consortium has exchanged contracts with the existing ownership of AFC Croydon Athletic to acquire the assets of the club.
"The consortium will own, operate and develop their childhood hometown football club.
"While completion of the deal is subject to legislative and governance procedures, the three consortium members – Wilfried Zaha, Stormzy and Danny Young – are excited about developing a community asset in the borough that gave them their own opportunities.
"They hope to take the entire community on this exciting journey with them."
AFC Croydon currently plays in the Combined Counties League Premier Division South.
The club's Mayfield Stadium in Thornton Heath has a capacity of 3,000, which includes 300 seats.
