Stakeholders are being encouraged to register and try out spogo, the main digital legacy project for the 2012 Olympic Games now available online in beta mode.
A customer-facing online service, www.spogo.co.uk has been designed to make searching and finding physical activities as simple as other consumer-friendly online services.
The aim is that, over time, the service will offer digital access and booking processes to every sports club, leisure centre, personal trainer, playing field and community centre.
Spogo's booking engine can be linked to a facility's own membership management system, which will establish a seamless transaction process to drive new members.
It will also publish a set of data standards for the sector, allowing systems integration and the data to be shared more easily between partners.
Dave Stalker, CEO of the Fitness industry Association (FIA), said: "In this digital age we cannot be left behind; we are trying to put people one click away from the solution to the problem of how to get active, to make exercise more available to everyone and join sport and fitness together.
"This is the start of this sector making an enormous difference to the health of the nation; in our Olympic year, with the legacy promises we have made, this is our one big chance. To be successful, spogo must be run by the industry for the industry and this is why we need it to be part of it."
The service is delivered by Sport England and the FIA. The stakeholder board represents the sector from a technical and operational perspective and includes GLL, Haulmont, Jonas Group, Legend, McCann World Group and SLM among others.
