South Shields embarks on riverside development
South Tyneside Council in Tyne & Wear plans to build a mixed-use development at South Shields.
The scheme will comprise a new zero carbon neighbourhood featuring a 100 per cent recycled waterfront park called New Shore.
The riverfront will provide public spaces filled with cafés and restaurants, as well as a nature reserve and artist studios.
Cllr Eddie McAtominey said: “This scheme builds on the local heritage of the former industrial landscape. The waterfront park will provide opportunities to wander along public spaces on the riverside, enjoy a coffee in one of the new cafés, bars or restaurants and enjoy views of the river and its activities.”
Urban architects Studio Egret West designed the new development with support from architectural planners AZ Urban Studio and RPS Planning.
David West of Egret West said: “Twenty years of rediscovering industrial waterfronts in the UK has for the most part led to privatised enclaves. This strategy seeks a more sustainable, longer term view that balances the desire for an employment creating, entrepreneurial waterfront with ambitions of a growing residential community.”
