South London Gallery unveils extension
A new extension, which aims to provide more space for art, artists and visitors, has been opened at the South London Gallery (SLG) in Camberwell.
The attraction has now expanded into a former derelict house and an education studio, which has created three small gallery spaces and a café, as well as accommodation for artists' residences. The education studio - the Clore Studio - is designed to increase SLG's capacity for outreach activities four-fold and will enable it to work with local schools, families and community groups.
Arts Council England (ACE) contributed £322,000 to help fund the capital project at SLG, which has also resulted in improvements to the venue. 6a Architects were selected to design the overhaul. SLG director Margot Heller said: "The South London Gallery's identity is completely enmeshed with its much-loved building, and the beautiful exhibition space is one of the principal reasons why both emerging and established artists want to exhibit here.
"Our expanded building will enhance the gallery's unique qualities and character and give it a new physical presence as a vibrant cultural resource which is free and open to all, driving the regeneration of the local area." ACE London executive director Moira Sinclair added: "With more exhibition space, more opportunities for artists and more young people experiencing the award winning work."
