Social Enterprise Partnership Wins Welsh Sports and Leisure Contract
Following a rigorous tender process, a joint bid by two leading not-for-profit leisure operators GLL and Halo Leisure, has won a fifteen-year contract to operate eight of Bridgend County Borough's leisure centres in South West Wales.
The decision will mean Bridgend Recreation Centre, Garw Valley Leisure Centre, Maesteg Sports Centre, Maesteg Swimming Pool, Ogmore Valley Life Centre, Pencoed Swimming Pool, Pyle Swimming Pool and Ynysawdre Pool & Fitness Club, are managed by the partnership on behalf of the Council. The new arrangements will see fundamental improvements to the existing services, with investment approaching £4.2 million. Bridgend Recreation Centre has already been earmarked for a major refurbishment in late 2012. This will include remodelling of the existing building, an extension of the health and fitness area and the introduction of an indoor climbing wall.
As well as the financial investment, users can expect improved services and an increase in the range of activities available to them. Access to facilities for disadvantaged groups through concessions will continue and the partnership will work to deliver the council's existing strategies: Bright Future – A Community Strategy for Bridgend County and The Vision for Creating an Active Bridgend.
Mark Sesnan, managing director of GLL said: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to deliver leisure services on behalf Bridgend County Borough Council.
"This contract win is part of GLL's growth strategy which sees us partnering with local leisure providers as we extend our reach throughout the UK. We are confident that together GLL and Halo Leisure will make a significant contribution to Bridgend County Borough Council's strategic aims."
Jon Argent, Chief Executive of Halo Leisure added: "Halo has reached the stage in its development where business growth through expansion has become an exciting opportunity. Our social enterprise business model, combined with a strong market profile have been recognised as a sign of quality and strength. We look forward to working with GLL and with the Council to make a real difference to the lives of local people, bridging the equality gap, and ensuring that the facilities and outreach programmes continue to focus on the delivery of increased access, participation and healthy lifestyles."
