Sir Ian Botham launches Cage Cricket concept
Former Somerset and England cricketer Sir Ian Botham has launched the new Cage Cricket concept at the Rose Bowl stadium in Southampton, Hampshire.
Lawrence Prittipaul - a former Hampshire cricketer - and Trevor McArdle devised the new game, which is the result of four years worth of trial and development. A combination of social enterprise and sporting entertainment, Cage Cricket is designed to increase participation opportunities for young people and adults in the game.
Described as a "dynamic, visual, high-octane" concept, Cage Cricket is played in enclosed spaces at a fast pace and using the latest technology. Six players compete at any one time, with all three cricketing disciplines - fielding, bowling and batting - providing point-scoring opportunities until a winner emerges.
In its mission statement, Cage Cricket aims to "give everyone regardless of background, gender, race or ability the opportunity to participate in, and appreciate the health, social and educational benefits of sport and cricket in particular".
