Show-cave planned for Muscat
The Oman Ministry of Tourism is reportedly planning to turn Suhur Cave in Muscat into a major tourist attraction.
According to the Oman Daily Observer, as a first step in the development of Suhur into a show-cave, the government is in the process of appointing a qualified consultant to design and supervise the construction of tourist facilities at the cave site. A number of firms are bidding for the consultancy services contract.
The ecologically unique cave in the capital's Dhofar Governorate is the third in a series of show-cave projects launched by the ministry in a bid to provide international visitors with a varied tourism experience when they visit the country.
The newspaper said Suhur Cave will feature a visitor centre, but the central attraction is 'Dhofar Hall' showcasing the natural and cultural heritage of Salalah and the Dhofar region. On display within Dhofar Hall will be a range of exhibits that offer insights into the region's surface and sub-surface geology, cave origins, and flora and fauna.
A 1.5-km trekking path leading to the viewing platform on the ridge overlooking Suhur Cave is also planned, as well as an upscale restaurant with investment from the private sector.
