Shigeru Ban's new Aspen Art Museum to open on 9 August
The new home for the Aspen Art Museum (AAM) is now complete, and ready to open to the public on Saturday 9 August.
Designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Shigeru Ban, the 33,000sq ft (10,058sq m) museum and gallery is the new home for the Aspen Art Museum, which had outgrown its old place of residence.
As Ban’s first permanent museum in America, the backdrop of the building is the awe-inspiring Ajax Mountains and the design more than lives up to its surroundings.
The simple glass box structure provides almost triple the museums previous exhibition space. Externally, the building's facade is draped over the glass in the form of woven wooden cladding, made of resin and paper allowing for durability and fire resistance.
The new museum now features a public rooftop space, which is accessible via a lift inside the foyer, or by a three-level grand staircase, which hovers between the glass and wooden facades, blending the outside and the inside seamlessly.
Several exhibitions and constant renditions of music, dancing and culture will fill up AAM’s opening weekend, allowing guests to stay overnight and experience the space and an exhibition for ‘dream interpretation activity’.
