To mark 60 years since the end of World War II, Sentosa, Singapore’s island resort, has proclaimed 2005 to be Visit Fort Siloso Year and introduced a new S$5m (£1.57m, US$3.05m, 2.28m euros) tour of the attraction.

Fort Siloso was a British military fortress during World War II and the tour enables visitors to experience its role in the war, as well as gaining an overview of Singapore’s military history.

The refurbishment has been carried out by American design firm Jack Rouse Associates, which specialises in the concept, planning and design of attractions for theme parks, visitor centres, museums, entertainment complexes, zoos and sports venues.

The tour starts with a short tram journey up to the new Fort Siloso Square, during which tourists are given an introduction to the fort’s history, before choosing one of three walking routes – the 45-minute Red Route, 35-minute Yellow Route, or the 20-minute Blue Route.

The walks provide informative films and exhibits, glimpses into what life was like for soldiers and volunteers, explorations of tunnel complexes and a visit to the Surrender Chambers.

Sentosa’s chief executive, Darrell Metzger, said: “The new Fort Siloso is now easier to access and navigate. Here, our overseas guests can experience the story of Singapore’s coastal defence in an authentic setting where key historical events actually happened.

“For our local guests, we hope Fort Siloso Tour will remind them of their forefathers’ role in Singapore’s war history and be more appreciative of the peace we enjoy today,” he added.

The Fort Siloso experience, which opened in November 2004, will contribute to the S$3bn (£940m, US$1.8bn, 1.4bn euros) rejuvenation project being carried out across Sentosa – by 2012 the resort aims to attract eight million visitors annually.
