Scream Zone opens its doors in New York
Scream Zone, a new Coney Island amusement park including four thrill rides in New York, US, has been opened by mayor Michael Bloomberg and Central Amusement International (CAI).
It is expected that the new attraction - to be run by CAI alongside the year-old Luna Park - will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to Coney Island each summer. The City of New York has acquired three parcels of land totalling 6.9 acres (2.8 hectares) and has awarded a 10-year lease to CIA for the operation and build of the amusement parks.
Scream Zone features the Soarin' Eagle rollercoaster; the Steeplechase; the Sling Shot; and the 100ft (30.5m)-tall Zenobio ride as part of its offer. The city government has invested more than US$6.6m (£4m, EUR4.5m) in order to support the openings of both Luna Park and Scream Zone.
CAI has spent $12m (£7.2m, EUR8.2m) on developing Scream Zone alone, working with a number of firms from the US and Italy to design, plan and operate the park's rides. Bloomberg said: "It had been decades since Coney Island saw any significant investment and the famed amusement district had dwindled as a result.
"Through the city's Coney Island Revitalization Plan, we've brought back the vibrancy that made the area famous around the world, and with it comes jobs, visitors and economic opportunity."
