S$5.5m expansion for Singapore Museum
The Asian Civilisations Museum is set to invest S$5.5m (US$4.5m, £2.8m, 3.5m euro) in expanding its building in Empress Place, Singapore.
A new wing, which is expected to open in 2015, has been funded by the Hong Leong Foundation (HLF) and is being designed by Singaporean architects GreenhilLi Consultants.
Surrounded by a light-filled atrium, and connecting to galleries on three floors, the new wing is a departure from the 19th century neo-classicism of the original structure.
S$500,000 (US$408,562, £247,444, 321,670 euro) of the S$5.5m donation from the HLF will be used to acquire artefacts related to Fujian culture.
The donation is part of HLF's efforts to promote the understanding and appreciation of Chinese art and culture.
Kwek Leng Beng, governor of HLF said: "By working with the Asian Civilisations Museum, we hope to be able to inform and educate future generations about the roots of our forefathers.
"We hope that through our donation, we are able to share this rich culture and educate Singaporeans, especially those with forefathers from Fujian, on their roots. "
